| Professor Luen Bik To
MBBS (HK), MD (Adel), MRCP (UK), FRCPA,
FRACP
Professor To directs the clinical, laboratory and research
haematology services on the RAH/IMVS campus, chairs the RAH/IMVS
Research Committee and serves as an Executive for the Hanson
Institute, the umbrella body for all biomedical research on
campus. He was the Head of the Clinical Haematology Unit in
RAH prior to assuming the Head of Haematology RAH/IMVS. He
considers the most important developments in the Clinical
Unit as the establishment of a comprehensive, consensus and
evidence driven patient management protocol system, the promotion
of high quality clinical trials to attract new treatment agents
and staff to the campus and the continuing improvement in
the patient journey for patients attending the Unit.
He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book
chapters. His group pioneered the mobilisation of autologous
peripheral blood haemopoietic progenitors and over 15 years
lay the scientific and clinical foundations for peripheral
blood stem cell mobilisation and transplantation (BLOOD review
1997) and demonstrated the possibility of ex vivo expansion
and maturation of haemopoietic progenitors to reduce post
transplant cytopenia.
Professor To introduced the technology of CD34+ haemopoietic
progenitor cells selection for transplantation to Australia
in 1995, spawning a number of tissue engineering projects.
The group was the first in Australia to achieve TGA accreditation
in allogeneic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation in the
IMVS Goods Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Standard Cell Processing
Laboratory in 2003, and carried out the first mesenchymal
stromal cell infusion for the treatment of steroid resistant
graft versus host disease in Australia. His other interests
are leukaemia and myeloma biology and is the co-founder of
the Australian Myeloma Forum.
The blend of clinical, diagnostic and research activities
of the Division provides a sound foundation for training and
teaching. The Division boasts one of the highest pass rates
in the Joint RACP/RCPA Haematology Examination.
Prof To runs a weekly consultation clinic on the RAH/IMVS
campus and a fortnightly clinic at the IMVS Highbury Collection
Centre. He consults on a wide spectrum of haematological malignancies
and various iron and anaemic disorders.
