Dr Ivan Bastian
MBBS, MSc, PhD, FRCPA (Microbiology)
Dr. Ivan Bastian has been involved in the field of infectious
diseases as a researcher or clinical microbiologist for 20
years. After completing his medical training in Melbourne
(1983), his PhD in Darwin (1996), and his FRCPA-Microbiology
training at IMVS (1997), he was awarded a Neil Hamilton Fairley
Fellowship by NHMRC to work at the WHO Coordinating Laboratory
for Tuberculosis (TB) in Antwerp, Belgium, between 1998-2000.
Ivan returned to IMVS in 2000 as a clinical microbiology consultant.
He is a member of the Australian Society for Microbiology,
the Australian Society for Infectious Diseases and the Australian
Society for Antimicrobials. In addition to general clinical
microbiology, Ivan has continued his special interest in TB.
As a result of the work by Ivan and Richard Lumb, the Principal
Scientist in the IMVS Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory,
on TB projects in Indonesia and the Pacific, IMVS has been
recognised as a WHO Supranational TB Reference Laboratory,
and the international reference laboratory for Indonesia,
East Timor, Solomon Islands and Vietnam. Ivan is also the
laboratory representative on Australia’s National TB
Advisory Committee.
