Associate Professor Philip Allen graduated in Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1960, trained in pathology at the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science under Dr EG Hardy (1962-63) and at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital under Dr R Meadows (1963-67). He was admitted to the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1966 and undertook further training under Dr FM Enzinger at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington DC (1967–70).
He returned to Australia in 1970, and occupied roles at the IMVS as pathologist (1970-73), Deputy Director (1973-75) and Chairman (1975-76) in the Histopathology Department.
He became Senior Director of IMVS at Mount Gambier (1976-84), Acting Medical Superintendent, Mount Gambier Hospital (1984), Senior Director, Histopathology Department, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (1984-95), Visiting Scholar, Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology, Chinese University of Hong Kong (1989), Chairman, Division of Pathology, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (1990-92), Visiting Scholar, Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology, Chinese University of Hong Kong (1994-96) and Professor of Pathology, Chinese University of Hong Kong (1996-98).
In 1998, he joined SouthPath at Flinders Medical Centre as a Pathologist and was appointed Associate Professor of Pathology at Flinders University in 2000.
Associate Professor Allen has been President of the Australasian Division of the International Academy of Pathology (1983-85), Vice President Australasia, International Academy of Pathology (1987-92), President Elect (1992-94) and President (1994-96) of the International Academy of Pathology.
Since 1991 he has been Chairman of the Australasian Soft Tissue Tumour Registry since 1989 and Member of the Soft Tissue Tumour Panel with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
He was Visiting Professor of Pathology for the 1985 Academic Year at both the Shanghai First Medical College and Peking Union Medical College Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, as well as Visiting Lecturer in 1989, 1991 and 1996 at the Australasian Division of the International Academy of Pathology South East Asia. He was also Visiting Professor at Nanjing Medical University in 1997.
Since 1991, he has been both an Honorary Professor of Pathology in the West China University of Medical Sciences and Honorary Consultant Pathologist in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical College.
His memberships include the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists (since 1991), Arkadi M Rywlin International Pathology Slide Club (since 1993) and the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology (since 1994).
Associate Professor Allen has been President of the History of Pathology Society (1998-99), Treasurer of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (2001–07) and Secretary of the Australasian Society of Anatomical Pathologists (2008-2011). In 1999, he received the Distinguished Pathologist’s Award in the Australasian Division of the International Academy of Pathology.
He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Surgical Pathology since 1979, an Associate Editor of Advances in Anatomic Pathology since 1999, a member of the International Advisory Board of Pathology International since 1994 and an editorial board member of three other pathology journals.
He has published over 80 journal articles and one book, has given more than 70 national and international slide seminars and courses and over 130 invited lectures in Australia and overseas.
