Dr Higgins trained in infectious diseases at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre and in microbiology and virology at the IMVS, completed a PhD in papillomavirus virology at the University of Adelaide and then spent 2 years in Cambridge, UK.
He returned to the IMVS in 1993 as a Medical Specialist in the Division of Virology. He contributes to the training of medical students and is an Honorary Consultant at the RAH.
Dr Higgins is a member of the Australian Society of Microbiology and the Australian Society for HIV Medicine. His interests include HIV and hepatitis, viral gastroenteritis and molecular diagnostic techniques for infectious diseases.
