Dr Thompson graduated in medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1977, and undertook paediatric training at the Adelaide Children's Hospital and the Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, Western Australia. She was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1983.

She moved to London in 1983 to study clinical genetics at the Hospital for Sick Children. During this time, she completed an MD on recurrence risks in severe osteogenesis imperfecta. 

Dr Thompson has worked as a consultant in clinical genetics at the WCH since 1994, and in London at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow and St Mary's Hospital from 1987 to1993

Her main interests are dysmorphology (diagnosis of syndromes) and skeletal dysplasias. She has had more than 70 articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals and has written several chapters for medical textbooks.
