Cervical Screening Update

31 March 2017

The Commonwealth Department of Health has announced a delay to the commencement of the new National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP). Previously scheduled to start on 1st May 2017, the new program is now planned to commence on 1st December 2017.

All women are strongly advised to have a Pap smear every two years as recommended by the current National Screening Guidelines and not to defer or delay these tests.

To ensure women continue to participate in the screening program, SA Pathology will offer the new Medicare funded ThinPrep test as a replacement for the conventional smear from the 1st May until the start of the new program. This will be bulk-billed to Medicare.

In addition to offering a reliable and easy collection method, the ThinPrep sample facilitates the implementation of computerised screening of the sample with enhanced test sensitivity and specificity. This is also the sample method that will be used for the new screening test from December.
