Professor Angel Lopez, AO

16 June 2017

Professor Angel Lopez is helping revolutionise the way we understand and treat cancer but Angel says he feels “undeserving” receiving one of Australia’s highest honours. He will today be appointed as an Officer to the Order of Australia for his medical and scientific research in the areas of immunology, cell biology and innovative developments in cancer treatment, in particular, acute myeloid leukaemia.

Professor Lopez said he was “terribly excited and appreciative of this wonderful recognition”. Since 2009 he has held the title of inaugural Co-director of the Centre for Cancer Biology, SA Pathology and University of South Australia, and has authored more than 200 research publications, including articles that have led to significant discoveries in understanding diseases such as leukaemia.

“The credit of these medical and scientific achievements should go in reality to the fantastic team at the Centre for Cancer Biology” Angel said, adding that this has been possible thanks to our research being embedded in the health system, in particular, the powerful translational environment of SA Pathology.
