Novel Coronavirus Renamed
14 February 2020
On 12 February 2020 the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the official new name for the novel coronavirus disease as COVID-19.
‘COVID’ is an abbreviated form of ‘coronavirus disease’, and ‘19’ is the year of identification.
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses has designated the name of the virus that causes COVID-19 as 'severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2' (SARS-CoV-2).
SA Pathology will add these names to the pathology test request catalogues.
Regards
Dr Tom Dodd
Clinical Service Director
