Smileyscopes now available
08 August 2022
SA Pathology and Smileyscope have partnered together to help alleviate anxiety for patients in our Paediatric collection centres.
Needles can make anyone nervous, but thanks to our new Smileyscopes, all patients aged four and up can now choose from a host of Virtual Reality (VR) and meditation programs to help stay calm.
The programs simulate alternate world experiences in a variety of languages, distracting patients from the procedure they are undergoing.
One of the most popular programs is an underwater adventure which simulates a diving experience hosted by Poggles the Penguin. As a school of fish swim by, the patient is encouraged to reach out their arms to interact with the creatures, helping create easy access for the phlebotomist to insert the needle. As the needle is inserted it is shown to be the fish gently nibbling the patient within the VR experience.
SA Pathology patients have given incredible feedback so far, with some even saying they “wouldn’t have been able to complete the test without it.”
Parents are enjoying Smileyscopes too.
“Last time my child had a meltdown for an hour... This time he didn't even know he’d had a blood test.”
“It was an incredible support for my son who has autism and anxiety.”
The devices are made with medical grade materials, keeping infection control in mind and making them easily cleanable between user-experiences.
Smileyscopes are suitable for everyone, so don’t feel discouraged if you’re an adult who dislikes having blood taken!
