Associate Professor Chris Carter is the Clinical Director of Cytopathology. He graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1984 and completed his specialist training at Flinders Medical Centre, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1990. He developed a special interest in cytopathology and gynaecological pathology while working at Flinders in the Cytology Department of Professor Svante Orell.
He commenced private practice in Adelaide in 1991 and in 1996 moved to Sydney, where he worked for three years at Dr Colin Laverty’s specialised gynaecological pathology laboratory and helped to pioneer the introduction of the ThinPrep Pap test to routine medical practice.
Associate Professor Carter holds the Diploma in Cytopathology of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and is a Fellow of the International Academy of Cytology. Associate Professor Carter is a past President and previous Chief Examiner of the Australian Society of Cytology and is a long-standing member of various committees of the SA Cervix Screening Program. He is also a member of both the anatomical pathology and the cytopathology advisory committees of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.
