After completing training in endocrinology and chemical pathology at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the IMVS, Dr Coates worked for two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh in clinical osteoporosis research.

Dr Coates returned to the IMVS as a chemical pathologist in 2005, and is currently responsible for diagnostic clinical chemistry, which includes specialised testing for endocrine disorders, trace elements and drugs of abuse, in addition to commonly performed biochemical tests. She provides advice on the use and interpretation of biochemical tests as part of the 24-hour phone service offered by the IMVS.

Dr Coates is a clinical university lecturer and an examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. She is also a member of the Royal Adelaide Hospital Endocrine Unit and continues her clinical practice in endocrinology.

Her principal interests include osteoporosis and bone metabolism, laboratory quality and education.
