Dr Dimuth Gunawardane graduated with an MBBS from the North Colombo Medical College, Sri Lanka, in 1996. Following one year of internship, he commenced forensic pathology training in the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Colombo and the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, where he successfully completed a Diploma in Legal Medicine and MSc in Forensic Medicine.
In 2003, he immigrated to Australia and undertook a PhD in anatomical sciences at the Medical School, University of Adelaide, South Australia. Following successful completion of his PhD in 2007, Dr Gunawardane commenced specialist training in anatomical pathology at SA Pathology, gaining the fellowship of the RCPA in 2012. He has worked as a Consultant Pathologist at SA Pathology (at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital), Healthscope Pathology Adelaide (Australian Clinical Labs) and Clinpath Pathology and is now based at SA Pathology- Flinders Medical Centre and Royal Adelaide Hospital sites.
Dr Gunawardane enjoys all aspects of surgical pathology and cytopathology but has a special interest in cardiovascular pathology, gastroenterology pathology, uropathology and gynaecological pathology. Currently, he provides pathology input for the Gynaecology, Urology Multidisciplinary Team meetings at the Flinders Medical Centre, Medical Oncology Multidisciplinary Team meeting at the Royal Adelaide Hospital as well as the Oncology Multidisciplinary Team meeting at Mount Gambier Hospital.
He also enjoys participating in medical student and registrar teaching. He is a member of the Australasian Division of the International Academy of Pathology and United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
