One of the pleasures of being the Director, Research and Innovation at SA Pathology is sharing vicariously in the success of our researchers. Success can be measured in many ways, but one common measure is to celebrate when researchers win funding to support a research idea they wish to explore. SA Pathology staff are involved in many successful research awards – evidence of the quality of our research, the esteem in which our researchers are held and of our leadership and strength in particular areas of scholarship.
Recently I was particularly pleased to see a team of young researchers, including two from SA Pathology, received funding to address a pressing problem for our healthcare systems. Despite enormous advances in our understanding of the genetic causes of disease, sadly the majority of rare disease patients remain without a diagnosis after genomic testing. In this research, the team will use innovative new approaches to identify disease causing genetic signatures and provide patients with an understanding and clinicians with new diagnostic information and, potentially, therapeutic avenues.
